Popularity makes a person feel wanted or important. It's not a bad thing to feel wanted, is it? Friends are friends, but having someone (you like but don't talk to) talking and giving you attention can boost your self-esteem (like Dark had mentioned).

I hate how many people assume being popular also means you're preppy or snobby.

Same here. Popular =/= snobby. There's plenty of popular people who are awesome (which is probably why they're so popular).

Popularity within a group means the degree to which you are liked by the people in that group. If most people dislike you, you're unpopular, if most people like you, you're popular.

You might be popular in one class, and unpopular in another.

That's how I see it.

As to why people think it's important... well, it gives you a lot of influence and it's nice to be liked.

How do you measure popularity when there is no 100%? Like, in a school, you could say 70% of people there like you, but you can't do that with the world as a whole. I'm out of school, I have about 80 people in my cell phone contacts - how do I measure popularity? Is it being able to walk down the street and be accepted? Is it people wanting to hug you? Is it the looks you get? Any of that could be seen as negative depending on your point of view. I mean, I get hugs from followers of alternative fashion and from children because I wear frilly poofy dresses. A woman who attracts "hugs" from sleezy men mightn't reciprocate actions like how I play along to children that I'm a princess or something.. both positive attention from one end, varying thoughts on the other end.

Connections are nice. It's good to be "popular" in the world if you consider connections a part of popularity. It could be the easy road into a good job, or a good house area, or free stuff, or holidaying, breaking into 'the industry.' If you do look at that, though.. eeehhh I'm so unpopular XD

Well everybody is popular in their own way...some people just dont know it...but they are and thats one reason that makes us all special..not just one not just one person is special and we all have to know that before you can call someone "popular" because we all are!!!
