I actually know someone that who was new to the school and somehow he instantly became popular and well, after a while, people noticed that he was changing into someone well, emo. For some reason, things happened and he didn't go with his old group anymore and just hung out with people who could accept him right now. But his old group was still kinda involved with him. He even became seriously emo, like apathetic, probably cause, they wouldn't really talk/hangout with him mooreeee, anymore. So, most of the time, he'd go to class, I'd see him walking there alone or one or two of his friends. But he use to, go to class with the whole bunch of the popular people. He tried to change back, he was all, "I'm dying my hair back to brown this weekend, I promise." and his friends were all, "Dying back to the old you." I personally thought, changing back to his old "whatever" just so that, he could be with his old popular friends and be accepted by them again was uberly stupid of him. Luckily, I don't think he did it. I don't remember. He even stuck with his better friends this year. But he was stupid too. Very stupid. I remember seeing him leave gym, to go the washroom and cut his wrist. I knew what he was doing. It was obvious. He would come back and leave. & when he comes back, he keeps looking at his wrist. Stupid boy. I hated him. He was involve in my life by just watching him, without him knowing. Hated him for that. I feel like a stalker. :-[

If i where such word it would be hard to make sure my 'friends' are not going to the other side. A big group of friends=I NO WANTIE.

popularity.....its pointless...I myself have made many friends over the years....I've had those stupid school-boy crushes....I was hit by a truck in sixth grade....by the 3rd time I'd explained it I was dead tired of attention.

Attention isn't always popularity, though.

*sigh* half the posts in this 8 page thread don't even address the question asked. Why do people think popularity is important? Where is the socio-analysis? The question isn't "What is your opinion on popularity?", "Are you popular?" or "Do you like popularity?" -.- I miss debates. What am I doing here? :P

I think PEOPLE think its important is because...

If they don't have popularity, they think that it means having no friends.
(JUST AN ANALYSIS!!)

Most of the people in my school are like that anyway.
But I'll get back to you when I get another interview with the popular kids.

AND!

Popularity in a way gets you NOTICED.
You would get the hottest guy in the school to be your boyfriend.
People would stare at you because they are wondering what it's like.
People would "worship" you.
People would actually KNOW your name.
People would want to KNOW YOU!

The "privilleges" of being popular are enjoying and satisfying in many ways.

Who's never ever liked the spotlight?

Maybe those introverts wouldn't but those EXTROVERTS especially want it.
The LIKE the spotlight because of these "privelliges".

But what's the point really?

In the end you're just left with a bunch of people you don't really know whom you call friends.
But you can't rely on them because they gossip like hell.
Even when you're popular, you can't block out the gossip that zips around the room.
In FACT, they actually get louder.
Meaning... you would hear them everywhere.

But this is just a comment after interviewing and analysizing my school.
