Default An eye-opener on Predators - "Megan is Missing (2011)"

Megan Stewart, 14, and her best friend Amy Herman, 13, though opposites in personality, are best friends. Megan carries the front of being the most popular girl in school, but this masks a lifestyle of hard partying, drugs, alcohol and indiscriminate sex. Amy, unpopular and socially awkward, clings to her relationship with Megan as a lifeline to social acceptance. Together, these two young girls forge a deep friendship based on their mutual needs. The two girls regularly communicate by web chat cameras or cell phone, and even meet boys online. As Megan seeks friends who are different from her usual posse of hanger-ons, she is introduced by a friend online to a 17 year-old boy named Josh in a chat room. Megan and Josh bond quickly, leaving Amy feeling a bit left out. One day, Megan goes to meet Josh in person, and she is never seen again. Amy launches into a concentrated effort to find her friend.
This is a synopsis for the movie Megan is Missing, a fictional story based on real events about two girls who were lured by an online predator and raped, tortured and murdered. The trailer is here, but Extend recommends nobody watch the actual movie if they value their sanity. Weird shit happens in the world, being aware of the things that can happen could save you from blindly falling into a trap and suffering the same fate as Megan.

Review:
... The creators of this movie, which were based on actual events by the way, were trying to educate viewers of todays predators and the ease of doing so using modern technology that many of the younger generation consider to be tame and innocuous. I agree that this is a tough film to watch especially if you have children that are teenagers or younger but it is also a call to arms for parents and responsible caring adults to take notice of their children's activities and know who their friends are and above all, to be involved in their children's lives. I wouldn't classify this movie as entertainment by any means nor did I find it enjoyable or a "feel good movie" to cuddle up with a loved one on a Saturday night but I would highly recommend it to any parent today. It's one of the scariest films I've seen in a long long time.
It's hard for kids to tell the difference between harmless and dangerous; I know when I was Megan's age I was attracted to danger and met a few people from the internet (who I haven't seen since, and thank God), and I will admit that I was lucky. I'm not the most maternal chick in the world, far from it, but I think reaching out to you guys is just as important as reaching out to your parents, if not more so, because you can prevent this and at the same time grow wiser.

You deserve your freedom, but you are naive all the same, so it comes at a price. Consult a friend and involve people in your affairs to avoid making that price YOUR LIFE. K? K

I think it's a good idea for a film, personally. Too many people are afraid of making a film based on actual true events and I'm not talking about that silly haunted house business either.

I agree what you say about parents needing to be more aware of what their children are doing online. And I will admit that I'm naive too, I've met some pretty horrible people online (as in their intentions were horrible), not just online predators, and I'm glad that in the end I have never agreed to meet up with them.

Instead of trying to freak youngsters out and giving the message not to talk to people on the internet because of murder, we should be telling themm HOW to talk to people on the internet. What to watch out for, ways to make sure they are talking to the real person. Yes, share the consequences as well, but it needs to be backed up by information. It's the difference between an abstinence program and a contraception program - which is more shocking? "Don't have sex, because you will get pregnant and die" or "here's how to use contraception to not get pregnant. Here's how to say no. Here's how to talk about sex"? The first is more shocking, surely. But I'd still say the second is more effective. Same kinda thing.

I mean, it's a horror movie. It has a vague message: be careful about weirdos on the internet. But does a 12 year old need to sit through graphic scenes of torture and murder to understand that message, and will they still come out of it with the right mindset of just being careful? I don't think so.

I fully support something like this, however:

Creepy, yet it gives a solid message and tips on how to avoid the situation.

Wasn't sure where I wanted this thread to go, thanks for fleshing it out

On kids actually watching the movie, I don't think it's a good idea no matter the reason. It's probably classified 18+ (then again I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't these days >.>)

Hmm. In that case I think it's probably best to use real examples rather than the film:

Here's one:

I saw the movie. It's pretty graphic. It says it's real footage. But, I don't know. Ugh. Either way, sanity=gone. For life. ;o;

I'm not sure they'd murder someone on film.

First google result says it's fictional. I already dislike this genre.

I still think it's legit.
They weren't actually murdered on camera.

Well now that I think about it, if it weren't for the dead body, and the creepy box contraption, I wouldn't have been as traumatized as I was last night. Putting my opinion out there.
