I don't know if I'd done this before but, when I see other people's oekaki's they always talk about layers. Well can someone please help me with them? @_@ I know where they are but I have no idea how to use them.

Layers are basically things you can use to draw on. =O It's very usual especially if you know you'd make mistakes or erase into other areas of your artwork.
I guess the only way to know about it is to experiment with it. How to use it, you just click on the individual layers and draw on them. For example layer 1 could be the sketch layer where you just scratch out your ideas. Instead of erasing everything and trying to make that sketch neater, you can go onto a different layer to draw over it. It's like a 'tracing paper'. It has a usage for coloring. For example you can color the hair on one layer and the skin on another, and if you make a mistake, like color out of the lines, erasing wouldn't affect the skin. yeah, it's kind of hard to explain it unless you experiment with it first. xD Just open up the layer panel and click on the individual layers. Draw one thing on each thing and see how it'd be useful to you. ^^ |

Oh sorry. >__<; I meant to post in this to help you with screenshots and everything but forgot. D: But Kyun-yo's explanation is pretty good.
I use one layer for the anatomy/basic body shapes (which is kinda unnecessary for me since I end up changing it when I actually draw it), one layer for the lineart and one layer for each clothing article. Ooh, and one for the skin and eyes.P.S. I was looking at your oekakis in your picstream and they are gorgeous! <3 http://kupika.com/pics.php?id=z4a3d55a663aaf9472mw

I know this reply is super super late but I thought I'd make a super quick
MS-paint doodle to show how layers work. I dunno if it'll help but here we go! ![]() (1) Think of drawing using layers as drawing on several pieces of transparent paper. So in this example we have 3 transparent pieces of paper, or 3 layers. Underneath that is how our picture looks so far. Pretty blank and boring so far. (2) Next I draw my line art on the top layer. A smiley face! Awesome! (3) Next I colour it in, but as you can see, I colour in my smiley face on a seperate layer. I'll explain why it's a good idea to do this. (4) OH NOES I made a mistake! ;__; Maybe my puppy barked really loudly for no reason and I jumped or something. Anyways, now I've coloured outside the line. On a normal piece of paper, or on a picture with only one layer, this would be a problem. I want to erase the extra colour but that can be really hard to do without erasing your super-awesome lineart too. (5) But with layers, I can simply erase the second layer, and leave my lineart (one the first layer) untouched! So I do that and decide that blue is a cooler colour than yellow. Then I give my picture a grey background. I also do my background on a seperate layer. Just in case I mess that up too. This explanations really simple, and there are tons of neat effects you can achieve with layers such as masks, layer modes like multiply, addition, subtract, dissolve, etc. Just keep experimenting and stuff and feel free to ask questions I guess. |
